The NAECI Agreement 2019: What You Need to Know

The National Agreement for the Engineering Construction Industry (NAECI) is a collective agreement that sets out the terms and conditions of employment for workers in the engineering construction industry. This agreement is negotiated every two years between the employers` association (ECIA) and the trade unions (Unite the Union and the GMB).

The latest version of the agreement, known as the NAECI Agreement 2019, was published in March of that year. It covers a wide range of topics, including pay rates, overtime rates, holiday entitlements, and much more. Let`s take a closer look at some of the key features of the agreement.

Pay Rates

One of the most important aspects of the NAECI Agreement is the pay rates that are set for different job roles. These rates are based on a system of `grades`, with each grade corresponding to a different level of skill and responsibility.

For example, the lowest grade is Grade 1, which covers workers who are new to the industry or who are carrying out basic manual tasks. The current pay rate for Grade 1 workers is £10.55 per hour. At the other end of the scale, Grade 7 workers, who are highly skilled and experienced, are currently paid £22.07 per hour.

Overtime Rates

In addition to basic pay rates, the NAECI Agreement also sets out the rates of pay for overtime work. These rates are commonly referred to as `enhancements`. The current enhancement rates are as follows:

– Time and a half for the first four hours worked on a Saturday

– Double time for any additional hours worked on a Saturday

– Double time for all hours worked on a Sunday

This means that if a Grade 3 worker, for example, works a 10-hour shift on a Sunday, they will be entitled to 8 hours at double time (the first 2 hours being paid at their basic rate).

Holiday Entitlements

The NAECI Agreement also sets out the minimum holiday entitlements that workers are entitled to. Currently, workers are entitled to 30 days` paid holiday per year, which includes the eight UK public holidays.

Maternity, Paternity and Adoption Leave

The NAECI Agreement also includes provisions for maternity, paternity and adoption leave. These provisions are in line with UK law, but they provide some additional rights for workers. For example, workers who have been employed for at least a year are entitled to up to 26 weeks` paid maternity leave, which is more than the statutory minimum of 14 weeks.

Conclusion

The NAECI Agreement 2019 is a comprehensive document that sets out the terms and conditions of employment for workers in the engineering construction industry. While it is a complex agreement, it provides important protections and benefits for workers, including fair pay rates, enhanced overtime rates, and generous holiday entitlements. If you work in this industry, it`s important to be familiar with the NAECI Agreement and to understand your rights under it.
